More Of This, Please: A Creative, Care-Centered Alternative to Resolutions

When we think about change, our minds often jump to restriction. Less scrolling. Less sugar. Less spending. Less rest. These less-of lists usually come from a desire to feel better—but they’re often rooted in self-criticism rather than care.
A more-of list offers a different starting point. Instead of focusing on what to remove, it asks what to invite in. Therapeutically, this shift supports nervous system safety, intrinsic motivation, and self-compassion—making change more sustainable and less punishing.
Why “More Of” Works Differently
From a mental health perspective, restrictive goals can activate threat responses: all-or-nothing thinking, shame, and hyper-monitoring. A more-of list shifts the focus toward values, nourishment, and regulation.
Rather than asking What should I stop doing? We ask, What helps me feel more like myself?

This reframing creates space for creativity—not just in art, but in how we live.
Turning Less-Of into More-Of (With Creative Prompts)
Here’s where intention meets imagination. For each area where you feel stuck or critical, try translating it into a more-of statement—and then explore it creatively.
Instead of: Less screen time
Move toward: More moments of quiet or sensory rest
Creative prompt: Draw or collage what “quiet” feels like in your body. Use shapes or colors rather than words.
Instead of: Less sugar or “better” eating
Move toward: More grounding, satisfying nourishment
Creative prompt: Write or sketch a meal that feels comforting and supportive—not perfect, just kind.
Instead of: Less procrastination
Move toward: More support, structure, or permission to go slowly
Creative prompt: Create a two-page spread: one page for what feels heavy, one page for what feels possible—no solutions required.
Instead of: Less spending
Move toward: More intentional use of resources aligned with my values
Creative prompt: Collage images or words that represent what you want your energy and resources to support.
These prompts aren’t about insight or fixing anything. They’re about listening.
Let the List Be a Living Document
A more-of list isn’t a contract. It’s a reference point. You might revisit it weekly, seasonally, or whenever you feel disconnected from yourself.
Try framing it as:
This season, I’m moving toward…
Things that help me feel regulated and supported…
What I want to offer myself more of…
You can write, paint, collage, or stitch your list—whatever helps it feel personal and alive.
Care Is a Direction, Not a Rule
Self-care isn’t about self-control. It’s about self-response. A more-of list reflects a therapeutic truth: people grow when they feel safe, supported, and met with kindness.
You don’t need to restrict your way into becoming someone new. You can move toward what nourishes you—creatively, gently, and at your own pace.
Sometimes, more of what matters is the most meaningful resolution of all.
